Mint Canyon
School History

Nestled against the semi arid foothills of the Santa Clarita Valley, Mint Canyon School is the smallest, most rural, and most culturally diverse school in the valley. Mint Canyon School first opened its doors in September of 1963 with 185 students. At that time, our one permanent building contained six classrooms surrounding the  cafeteria/library/multipurpose room. Since then, thirteen portable classrooms have been  added, the original cafeteria has become the library, and the office and cafeteria are  housed in portable structures. With major student growth predicted over the next five years, extensive plans for remodeling our one permanent building as well as construction for new permanent classrooms, office area, and cafeteria exist.

While there are some expensive homes within our attendance area, more than half of our 380 students come from family units that are well below the poverty level. Compared with the other seven elementary schools in the Sulphur Springs School District, Mint Canyon School has the highest percentage of students in the lower socioeconomic bands, the highest transiency rate, as well as the highest percentage of students who speak a language other than English. Yet, the STAR scores and API index indicate Mint Canyon School is making the greatest strides and gains in academic achievement. During the 2001 - 2002 and the 2002 - 2003 school years, we received the California Title I Achieving School award. During the spring of 2002, we were named as a California Distinguished School. During the spring of 2003, we were honored as one of California’s thirty five nominations as a National Blue Ribbon School, and have been recently notified that we have indeed been honored with this highest award which can be bestowed upon a school.

With a student population hovering around 380, a cozy, hometown feeling tone exists at Mint Canyon School. Our entire school community is a close knit family which cares deeply about each other’s uniqueness and successes. Support from the Sulphur Springs School District, a dedicated PTA, and good old fashioned hard work by the staff have all contributed to the success of Mint Canyon School. Along with our cozy, hometown atmosphere, an exciting spirit of cooperation exists at Mint Canyon. As a caring school community, we support a nurturing learning atmosphere which stresses the social, educational, and emotional growth of each child so they may become productive and successful citizens. Mint Canyon School represents a commitment to educational excellence.
