EL                          EL STUDENT MEETING TRENDS                              Read

During our meetings with our targeted 102 LTEL and At-Risk ELs, a trend has emerged.  Students reported challenges with Reading Comprehension and meeting AR Goals. The students who did meet their goal, explained that their teachers guided them with reminders and strategies like journaling notes for longer books.

Reading towards AR Goals is a positive study habit discussed during student meetings, so please connect with your students to encourage participation and support success which offers students and teachers a way to track progress.

We will discuss strategies for supporting students with AR goals during our LTEL and At-Risk Teacher PD on Wednesday, Dec 19th 3:30-5:30 pm at the District Office.  Please register for this opportunity by filling out the Google form linked HERE.

    READ WITH ME

The Santa Clarita Valley Education Foundation has 14 volunteers that don’t have Read With Me assignments.  They are requesting that we reach out to schools.

As a reminder, SCVEF volunteers are paired with a teacher who has students needing some extra help with language arts and literacy.  They commit to at least 1 hour each week in the classroom. Or the volunteers can work with accelerated readers so the teacher has more time with students needing help.  It’s up to the teacher to decide how best to use the volunteer, but the focus should be on literacy.

Teachers should complete the attached form and return it to the address provided on the form so that they can be matched with a volunteers.  Reading Volunteer Form

    WEEK OF SEPTEMBER 24, 2018

    Goal Setting Conferences      Goal setting

Please remember that the assessments that were given at the beginning of the school year measured the students’ acquisition of previous year's skills. The scores do not transfer to a report card (1, 2, 3, 4) grade but serve as a screener to indicate the potential for students to be ready for the current grade level skills. ( - an area of strength (student is ready to learn current grade level skills: # - an area for improvement) The purpose of the meeting next week is to  start a collaborative relationship with parents and to share strengths, strategies, areas for growth, etc.

    For your Conference:

      1. In “Parent Input” Section - Teacher will hand write information that parent wants to share about student’s strengths and/or area(s) of growth.
      2. Parent Signature -  Parent signs the form at the end of the conference and is provided a copy. If parent has added any input that has been added to the Goal Setting Conference form, the teacher will either write the same information on both copies or make a copy of that updated form and send it home with the student the following week.
      3. File copy - Teacher places the signed form into student’s cumulative file.

    Combination Class Teachers

Educational Services is committed to supporting teachers where ever we can.  We are working on support for combination classes in the areas of planning, pacing, scheduling and curriculum.  Documents to that affect will be sent next month.  In the meantime, attached is a link to Benchmark Combo Class resources (also found in Program Support on Benchmark’s My Library). The attachment shows Combined Skills at a Glance.

             AR RequirementsAR

As a reminder, K /1st grade students may begin AR when they have mastered 64 words              from the Benchmark  Advance FSA word list.

    tech talk Tech Talk

Don’t see Kodable? The district is no longer using this app as a coding resource. Have no fear, there are 3 amazing options to use in its place.

    • codeSpark Academy-free app for teachers, great for TK-2: no reading required!,computer science skills, games to play, games to create & program, coming soon- students can program interactive stories!
    • Code.org-K-5 courses are compatible with computers, Chromebooks & iPads, 6th grade curriculum is compatible with computers and Chromebooks, quick sign in with Clever
    • CS First-recommended for 4th grade and up, students create projects using Scratch(block based coding), can work individually or collaboratively

    ARE YOUR KIDDOS TYPING?

    Typing Club

The district is no longer using Type To Learn. As an alternative, several teachers have been piloting Typing Club and have found it to be engaging and effective. Student feedback has been very positive.

    GATE Google Classroom

It has come to our attention that a few student's work has disaappeared from their drive. Stephanie Cruz and Kim Tredick are trying to figure this out and are trying to retrieve the documents. We do think that teachers, who have been invited to the classroom, may have inadvertently deleted the assignments. Please know that we are working to figure this out; we do understand that you need these documents for Goal Setting next week.

    Changes in Illuminate     FSA

When you return from Fall Break, your Goal Setting Tiles in Illuminate will be removed from your Tile Dashboard. Do not worry--ALL OF YOUR DATA FROM YOUR INITIAL ASSESSMENTS IS SAVED IN ILLUMINATE! You will have a single new tile! It will be the FSA (Foundational Skills Assessments) tile, to access all of the Benchmark Advance FSAs for grades TK - 6.

     ELL

    ELD Matrix

In response to feedback from the first round of EL PD, the ELD matrices have been revised in order to serve as a more effective formative assessment tool. More information will be shared at Fall EL PD. In the meantime, teachers should continue to collect student observational data to support their EL students progression across the proficiency level continuum.

HERE is the link to the Google Drive folder with PDF copies of the ELD Matrices.

Teachers should download their Grade Level matrix to begin using it. If teachers have already printed out last year’s Matrices and entered information into the previous version then they can chose not to use the revised matrices this year.  Please contact Melanie Morales-Van Hecke with any questions.

    EL EL PD Follow up

In order to continue to support our district focus on ELs, Ed. Services will be conducting ELD walk throughs following Fall EL PD sessions.  Observational notes will support future professional development. Principals have provided Ed. Services with Designated ELD times. If you make adjustments to your schedule please be sure and notify your Principal.

    GOAL SETTINGGoal setting

    Building Relationships

Please remember that the Goal Setting Conference is an opportunity to start building relationships with your parents and families. Have a conversation with the parents to get to know more their child. And, remember, (from Capturing Kids’ Hearts), “You have 30 seconds to make a first impression. But it takes approximately 20 additional encounters to undo or change a bad first impression!”

“When teachers increase their capacity to engage parents in dialogue, there are benefits for parents, students, and teachers. Effective dialogue is based on mutual concern, trust, and an ability to appreciate one another’s perspective” (Lawrence-Lightfoot).

    ELD Matrix and Goal Setting

Please disregard the Sept. 21st ELD matrix due date on the Goal Setting timeline handout distributed during PDD #1. The digital version of the timeline linked on the Illuminate Homepage has been updated to exclude the ELD matrix item.

Teachers will receive more information regarding ELD matrix expectations during Fall PD.

In the meantime, please continue to use the matrix as a formative assessment tool to support intentional planning for EL student instruction.

ELD matrices will be collected and reviewed by principals with report cards in Nov.

Connecting with families of our English Learner students

Back by popular demand….EL families will once again be invited to attend a FREE tour of the CSUN campus. Transportation and Spanish translation are also provided.

Our visit will be during Fall Break, on October 2nd. Last year's visit was a huge success and families were grateful for the opportunity to start focusing  their families to be College Ready!

Thank you for distributing the yellow flier to your EL students. HERE is a copy for your reference.

    Goal Setting

Thank you for your hard work in getting your initial assessments complete!

Many of you are ready to start thinking about Step 3 in the process: GREEN tile Areas Input Grid (Here is the PDD#1 Presentation for your reference). To see the results from your assessments, click on BLUE tile - Data Results to get a single page class report of all data results for teacher (HELP DOC). Use the single page class report of all data results (printed from use the BLUE tile Data Results) to assist in determining areas of strength and areas for growth. Then use using your GREEN tile Areas Input Grid, enter check marks.

    For Academic areas:

    • Teachers enter areas of strength by checking boxes.
    • Teachers leave the box blank to indicate an area for growth. (The blank will produce a # on the Goal Setting form.)

Remember, you can always go to your Home tile in Illuminate for all Goal setting information. Please reach out to Ed Services with your questions. We are here to support you through this process.

    Manually Entering Scores:

If you elected to complete assessments by paper-pencil, then please use this document to help you. Remember, all of the Help Docs can be access by going to your Home tile in Illuminate.

    Week of August 27, 2018

    Goal setting

Please adhere to the deadline dates listed on the Assessment Menu. The deadline for the MATH Goal Setting assessment is TOMORROW, August 24th.  If, for some reason, that date is not met, teachers will have to handwrite student scores on the Goal Setting conference form that is shared with parents.

    STAR

STAR READING deadline date has been changed to September 7th as noted in the initial Goal Setting training on PDD #1.

    FLUENCY

For the purposes of Goal Setting, you only need to be concerned with the words per minute (WPM). However, Benchmark does have a lot of useful information regarding fluency. For example, parents might be interested to know the target number of words per minute for each grade level. Parents also might want to know particular elements such as intonation in order to better support their child. This additional information might be useful to put in the comments section on the Goal Setting form. However, the only requirement for Goal Setting is the number of words per minute. Use this document to help.

    PACING GUIDES

We received feedback about the dates on the Math Pacing Guides.  They have been adjusted and have been sent to your site. They are linked here for you as well.

    RFEP CRITERIA

With the administration of the new State Assessment, ELPAC, our RFEP criteria has been updated.

HERE is a link to a document detailing some important information detailing our RFEP criteria.

    ELPAC INITIAL ASSESSMENTS

TBD students will be administered the Initial ELPAC assessment by our District Initial ELPAC Examiner team within 30 days of their enrollment. The Initial ELPAC scores will determine if a newly enrolled student is EL or IFEP (Initially Fluent English Proficient).

Parents are notified prior to testing and then again notified of designation and provided score reports.

Sites will also be sent score reports for students’ cum. Aeries will also be updated to reflect the update designation after testing.

HERE is a link to a document detailing some more important information detailing our Initial ELPAC administration process.

Some of your initial assessments for Goal setting are required hard copies. These are coming to you today through District Mail.

IMPORTANT: 2nd - 6th Grade online assessments: As a teacher, you DO NOT need to be logged in to have your students take the online assessment. You only need to log in if a student has trouble logging in and you need to reset the password. PLEASE DO NOT open a new assessment window, as this is unnecessary and will cause conflict resulting in student(s) unable to take the test. AFTER students have completed the assessment, you may log in as see results. Please contact Kim Grim or Kim Tredick if yuo have any questions about this process. Thank you!

    From the IMC:

ALL instructional materials requests need to go through your librarian. Please do not email the IMC directly with your request. The Google Material Request Form will be shared with teachers in a couple of weeks AFTER student numbers and class assignments have been settled.

    Summer AR:

The list of the students who achieved their Summer AR goals will be sent to Principals by the end of next week. Remember, the students who met their Summer AR goal have a 25% jumpstart on their first trimester AR goal.
