Friday Update, October 10, 2025
Good evening, Sulphur Springs Families and staff, this is Dr. Catherine Kawaguchi, your Superintendent with a Friday update, October 10, 2025.
October is National School Bus Safety Month
Every October, we take time to recognize the importance of school bus safety for students, families, and drivers. This year, School Bus Safety Week will be observed October 13-17, 2025.
During School Bus Safety Week, all bus riders will participate in a school bus evacuation drill.
This hands-on practice helps students learn how to exit the bus safely and calmly in case of an emergency. Please talk with your child about following directions and staying focused during this important safety exercise.
It’s a great reminder for everyone—especially parents and drivers in our community—to help keep our students safe around school buses and in school zones.
Families, here is how you can help:
- Slow down and stay alert in school zones and neighborhoods, especially during pickup and drop-off times.
- Never pass a stopped school bus with red lights flashing—it means children are getting on or off.
- Avoid distractions. Put your phone away—distracted driving is one of the biggest dangers near schools.
- Never pass a stopped school bus with red lights flashing—children are getting on or off.
- Don’t double park or block the bus stop—this makes it harder for drivers and students to see each other.
- Teach your child about the “Danger Zone.” This is the 12 feet around a bus where the driver may have trouble seeing them.
- Remind your child to stay seated and keep aisles clear while riding the bus.
- Remind your child(ren) the importance of wearing seat belts on the bus
Did you know?
- California school bus drivers complete at least 20 hours of classroom training and 20 hours of behind-the-wheel instruction before they can drive students.
- They also receive 10 hours annually of safety related training to stay current on laws and best practices.
- Every school bus in California must meet strict safety standards, including emergency equipment and child safety alert systems.
Together, we can make sure every child gets to and from school safely, every day.
