Mitchell Community School

Achieving Excellence

  • August 15, 2019

Dear Families of Mitchell Community School,

Welcome back to another school year!  We hope you had an amazing summer! We have a number of new things happening this year, so please read this letter carefully.

This past year, our Leadership Team challenged our Mitchell team members to think about the values necessary to drive our behaviors and actions, in order to achieve our school wide goals.  Our theory of action is that if we all (staff, students, families and community members) exhibit our core values, then we will be closer to our vision of preparing students to be 21st century learners in our global society.  Our Core Values are as follows:

Respect:  We believe in treating everyone with compassion and integrity.  We value equity and diversity.

Collaboration:  We take ownership of our community and work together to problem-solve.

Trustworthiness:  We believe in providing and honest and safe environment where individuals can be their authentic selves.

Responsibility:  We hold ourselves accountable for our work and demonstrate perseverance and problem-solving.

Lifelong Learning:  We have a growth mindset and commit ourselves to continuous improvement.

We invite all our families to partake in instilling these values in our students by acknowledging them, teaching them, and modeling them in your own behaviors.

In addition to our Core Values, we have two main academic areas of focus in our instructional program.  This year, we commit ourselves to teaching for mastery in all subjects, and we strive to create a culture of literacy.  As you visit classrooms this year, you will see learning targets, or “I can” statements that expect students to achieve.  We will help students develop their own awareness of their learning so they can become stronger, independent, self-directed learners.

Finally, we are excited to share that once again we will be participating in a School Wide Enrichment Model, in which students in Grades 1-6 will participate in a STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math) activity every Friday, from 1:30PM-2:30PM.  The enrichment will start in October, so stay tuned for more information.

These are exciting changes for this upcoming year and we know that we can achieve more with the support from you, our families, and from our community.  We also have a new Assistant Principal, Erica Klahs-Camara, joining us every Monday-Wednesday. We look forward to working together for another successful year at Mitchell Community School.

    Sincerely,

    Dr. Marie Dacumos
